The high forehead, with a slight bulge above the bridge of the nose, is framed by crescent-shaped locks that are arranged in a lively manner. They form a fork above the center of the forehead and reach down to the level of the small, protruding ears. The elongated face tapers towards the chin. The almond-shaped eyes, with incised irises and shallow-drilled pupils, are accentuated by the thick upper lids and flat, broad lower lids. A subtly modeled philtrum leads from the slender nose to the small, closed mouth with a curved upper lip and full lower lip. The short neck widens towards the base. The fabric of the veil merges into a horizontal base ring. Votive heads of this type are a characteristic of Italic coroplastic art. They attest to a votive practice that, from the 5th century B.C. onwards, spread from central Italy (Latium) to northern Etruria, Campania, and partly also Apulia, and is documented for numerous sanctuaries of a wide range of deities (often goddesses associated with fertility, birth, motherhood and healing). The men and women depicted probably represented the donors, although the heads are not true portraits but rather stereotyped types. This is due in no small part to the use of moulds (matrices) in the production process. Interior hollow. The front of the head is modelled in high relief and was made using a mould. The reverse is slightly convex and smoothed. The details were added using a modeling stick. Reassembled from large fragments; breaks retouched. Several minor chips and abrasions.
